Oranjestad, 9 February 2025 — Renovation works at the pier near ex-Brisas del Mar in Savaneta have officially begun with a groundbreaking ceremony. The start of the project was announced by the Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs and the Primary Sector, Geoffrey Wever.

Following the signing of the execution agreement in September 2025 with the contractor awarded the tender, construction activities commenced on Monday, marking the formal launch of the project.

Key infrastructure for the Savaneta community

The ex-Brisas del Mar pier is a vital piece of infrastructure for the Savaneta community. It is widely used for fishing activities, launching and docking boats traveling to and from the reef, as well as for initiatives organized by local foundations and community groups.

Due to the renovation works, the pier will be temporarily out of service for several weeks. The minister indicated that the public will be informed in a timely manner once the pier is ready to reopen.

Strengthening the fisheries sector

The maintenance and renovation of piers across Aruba form part of the government’s priorities to strengthen and further develop the fisheries sector. In line with the AVP–FUTURO Government Program 2025–2028, an amount of Afl. 500,000 has been allocated specifically for the renovation of piers for local fishermen.

The Savaneta pier is the first project within this broader initiative. Renovation works at the pier in Colony, located at Rodgers Beach, are expected to follow.

Safer, more durable pier

As part of the renovation, the pier will receive new support piles and a completely new deck, designed to improve durability, safety, and overall functionality. The works are being carried out by a contractor with extensive experience in the renovation and maintenance of piers throughout Aruba.

Commitment to sustainable development

According to Minister Wever, adequate and reliable infrastructure is essential for the sustainable growth and development of the fisheries sector. The AVP–FUTURO cabinet remains committed to providing fishermen and the wider community with the necessary infrastructure, whether for professional use or recreational purposes.

“I am pleased to see that our vision for the fisheries sector is becoming a reality,” Minister Wever stated. “We are starting with one pier and will continue step by step with the next ones until all are renovated. The ex-Brisas del Mar pier will soon be fully renewed and ready for use by our fishermen and the residents of Savaneta.”
