ORANJESTAD — For visitors who come to Aruba wanting to experience more than beaches and sunshine, Sunday evening offers a particularly direct introduction to another part of the island: its food.
The final evening of the Autentico Aruba Culinary Festival takes place tonight, October 11, from 6:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. in downtown Oranjestad. Along Wilhelminastraat and the surrounding streets, The Pavilion brings restaurants, chefs, culinary students, local producers and beverage makers together in one open-air setting.
For a tourist asking, “Where can I actually taste Aruba?”, Autentico may be one of the clearest answers this weekend.
Authentic Aruba is more than one recipe
Aruban cuisine cannot easily be reduced to a single dish. The island’s culinary identity has developed through generations of Caribbean, Latin American, European and other international influences. ATA describes Aruba’s food culture as being shaped by more than 100 nationalities, alongside family recipes, local traditions and the work of a new generation of chefs.
That is important for visitors to understand.
“Authentic Aruba” can mean traditional food and ingredients, but it can also mean seeing how people who made Aruba their home brought their own culinary traditions into the island’s culture. Autentico places those stories next to each other rather than presenting Aruba as having only one type of cuisine.
The result is a culinary walk through contemporary Aruba.
At The Pavilion, the official programme includes businesses emphasizing local seafood and Caribbean flavors, Aruba Experience Café inviting guests to “taste Aruba’s heritage,” locally produced beverages from businesses such as Balashi Brewery, Alto Vista Winery & Distillery and Red Anchor Distillery, and creations from Aruban chefs alongside international cuisines that have become part of everyday island life.
Food, but also Aruba’s next generation
There is another important element visible at the festival: education.
Cadushi Restaurant by EPB San Nicolas is participating with dishes prepared by students, giving young culinary talent an opportunity to work in a professional festival environment in front of thousands of residents and visitors. The official Pavilion programme specifically highlights the student-made food and the hands-on culinary learning behind it.
The photographs from Saturday evening show exactly that wider atmosphere: chefs cooking over open fire, dishes being finished directly in front of guests, culinary students at work, crowded communal tables and visitors moving between the different food areas.
It feels less like simply choosing a restaurant for dinner and more like walking through a temporary culinary neighborhood.
An invitation to visitors: leave the resort area for one evening
For tourists staying around Palm Beach or Eagle Beach, Autentico is also an opportunity to spend an evening in downtown Oranjestad and meet Aruba through its people, flavors and local businesses.
The Pavilion combines food with music, entertainment and culinary demonstrations. Sunday’s programme also includes culinary sessions with local chefs Aldwin Donata and Melvin Winterdaal, followed by internationally known chef Marcus Samuelsson, while separate mixology sessions feature local professionals and international mixologist Luca Cinalli.
And visitors currently have a particular opportunity. The official Autentico ticket page states that general resident tickets are sold out, while a separate international allocation remains available specifically for people visiting Aruba. ATA says that allocation is intended to connect visitors with Aruba’s culinary talent, local flavors and cultural identity.
So if you are in Aruba today and have been wondering where the island itself is on the menu, consider spending Sunday evening in Oranjestad.
Come hungry, walk from stand to stand, speak with the people preparing the food and try something you may never have ordered at your hotel.
Because Aruba can be discovered through its beaches and landscapes, but tonight, it can also be discovered one plate at a time.
