Aruba Tourist Channel Launches Dedicated Survey to Explore Balance Between Tourism and Nature Protection

Residents and actual visitors will be surveyed separately through opinion.arubatc.com to provide measurable insight into the future of Aruba’s North Coast

ORANJESTAD — Aruba Tourist Channel is launching a dedicated Local & Visitor Survey through opinion.arubatc.com to better understand one of the central questions in the current debate over Aruba’s North Coast: how can the island protect its natural environment while still preserving responsible access and tourism experiences?

The survey is deliberately divided between two separate groups: Aruba residents and actual visitors to the island.

The goal is to distinguish between what local residents believe tourism should be allowed to do, and what tourists themselves actually expect from their Aruba experience.

More Than a Simple UTV Debate

The survey is not designed as a simple choice between “allow UTVs” or “ban UTVs.”

The discussion has become much broader.

It now includes questions about designated routes, access to natural areas, smaller groups, certified guides, supervision, possible geofencing, enforcement and which areas may require stronger protection.

That search for balance is also reflected in government policy.

In 2024, the Government of Aruba already stated that the island needed a better balance between adventure tourism and environmental protection, citing both environmental concerns and the popularity of UTV and ATV activities among visitors.

What Do Residents Think?

The local survey focuses on how Aruba residents themselves view the island’s future development.

Should access to certain areas be restricted? Should tourism activities continue under stricter conditions? How should employment and economic activity be weighed against the protection of flora, fauna and landscape?

This provides a clearer picture of how Aruba itself views the future use of these areas.

And What Do Tourists Actually Say?

The second part of the survey is specifically for visitors.

That distinction is important because tourism debates often include claims about what visitors supposedly want without asking them directly.

Visitors can therefore indicate how important nature protection is to them, how they prefer to experience the North Coast and whether measures such as designated routes, smaller tour groups or certified operators would actually reduce the quality of their experience.

The survey can also measure whether limiting or removing certain attractions would genuinely affect their decision to visit Aruba.

This makes it possible to replace assumptions with direct responses.

Survey Comes at a Critical Moment

The survey is being introduced while government, environmental organizations and tour operators are actively discussing possible solutions for the North Coast.

The Government and several tour operators have already signed a protocol in which regulated access, definitive routes, certified guides, supervision and enforcement are listed as possible areas for further agreement.

At the same time, discussions with Aruba Birdlife Conservation remain part of the wider legal and policy process.

Protection Against Manipulation

Because the issue is politically and socially sensitive, the survey will include additional technical safeguards through Aruba Intelligence.

These protections are intended to detect potential duplicate submissions, automated activity and unusual voting patterns.

The objective is not to determine which opinion is acceptable, but to improve the reliability of the resulting data.

Two Voices, One Clearer Picture

The purpose of the survey is not to declare one side the winner.

It is to create better information.

What do residents want to protect?

What do visitors actually expect?

And where do those interests overlap?

Through opinion.arubatc.com, Aruba Tourist Channel wants to make that middle ground more visible.

Because Aruba’s future does not necessarily have to be framed as tourism versus nature.

The more important question is how Aruba can continue offering meaningful visitor experiences within limits that protect the island’s natural heritage for the future.
