U.S. airlines offer rescue fares after Spirit shutdown

WASHINGTON/ORANJESTAD — After the sudden shutdown of Spirit Airlines, the U.S. Department of Transportation has announced a series of relief measures for passengers who now need to rebook cancelled flights. Major U.S. airlines, including United, Delta, JetBlue and Southwest, have agreed to cap certain ticket prices specifically for former Spirit passengers, provided they can show proof of a Spirit booking and payment.

The measures follow Spirit Airlines’ announcement that it has ceased operations after 34 years in business. The ultra-low-cost carrier, known for its yellow aircraft and low base fares, had been under severe financial pressure after earlier bankruptcy proceedings, rising costs and failed rescue efforts.

Capped fares for stranded passengers

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, United, Delta, JetBlue and Southwest are capping ticket prices for Spirit customers who need to rebook cancelled flights. To access these special fares, passengers must provide at minimum a Spirit flight confirmation number and proof of payment.

The relief fares are temporary. JetBlue is making them available for 72 hours. Southwest is offering the option for 72 hours, but only in person at an airport ticket counter. Delta is making its relief fares available for five days. United is making its online relief fares available for two weeks.

Reduced fares on overlapping routes

The Department of Transportation also said American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are offering reduced fares on high-volume routes previously served by Spirit. Allegiant has committed to freezing fare prices on routes that overlap with Spirit’s network. Frontier is offering discounts of up to 50 percent off base fares across its network through May 10.

The Points Guy reported that several airlines moved quickly after Spirit grounded its fleet, offering rescue fares, discounts, added capacity and employee assistance. United, for example, launched a dedicated website for affected Spirit customers, with many one-way rescue fares reportedly capped at 199 dollars and longer routes capped at 299 dollars. JetBlue announced 99-dollar rescue fares for Spirit customers, according to the same report.

Assistance for former Spirit employees

The relief measures are not limited to passengers. According to the Department of Transportation, major U.S. carriers are also extending travel pass benefits and spare jump seats to Spirit pilots, flight attendants and other employees who need to return home. Some airlines are also offering preferential employment interviews to former Spirit team members.

American Airlines and United Airlines are also creating dedicated microsites for Spirit employees who want to continue working in aviation.

Refunds and compensation remain separate issues

The shutdown does not automatically mean every affected passenger will immediately receive full compensation through another airline. Bankruptcy proceedings can affect what customers are entitled to receive and how quickly refunds are processed. The Guardian reported that relief measures are intended to help stranded passengers find alternative travel, while Spirit has directed customers toward refund procedures.

Passengers who booked directly with Spirit may need to follow Spirit’s refund process. Those who paid by credit card may also have the option to dispute charges or request reimbursement through their card issuer, depending on the circumstances and applicable rules.

Relevance for Aruba travelers

For Aruba, the relief program is important because Spirit had recently been serving the island’s U.S. travel market, especially through the Fort Lauderdale corridor. The rescue fares may help reduce immediate disruption for passengers who had booked Spirit flights to or from Aruba.

However, the relief is temporary. The longer-term issue remains whether other airlines will permanently replace Spirit’s low-cost capacity and whether fares to Aruba will remain competitive without Spirit in the market. For passengers, the immediate advice is clear: check the airline-specific rescue fare rules quickly, keep the Spirit confirmation number and proof of payment available, and compare refund options before buying a replacement ticket.
